How Vehicle Impound Releases Work in California

Call first

- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Proof you're the registered owner, or written authorization if you're picking up for someone else
- Payment for any towing and storage charges
Police holds
If law enforcement placed a hold on the vehicle, they must release it before the tow company can hand it over. The tow company can tell you whether a hold exists and what the next step is.
Personal property
You can usually retrieve personal belongings from a stored vehicle even before you're ready to take the car — just call to arrange access.
